In 1996, Sequoia Hospital remodeled its Birth Center to include thirteen state-of-the-art comfortable birthing suites to accommodate the estimated one hundred and ten babies born at Sequoia each month.

Today, however, Sequoia's Birth Center averages more than one hundred and twenty-five deliveries per month, and that number is rising. To properly handle the increase in births as well as the extended care needed for mothers with complicated deliveries, Sequoia Hospital is in critical need of expanding its Birth Center.

Proceeds from the Sequoia Hospital Foundation's 2009 events will fund the necessary expansion of the Birth Center by creating four new birthing suites. The addition of these suites will not only address our own need for increased birthing facilities but will allow Sequoia to continue to serve as a "overflow" facility for other healthcare facilities within the community.

Mothers who deliver at Sequoia traditionally remain in the same comfortable birthing suite through labor, delivery, recovery and discharge. These suites are designed to reflect Sequoia's belief in togetherness for the whole family. Each suite features a built-in bed or sleeper chair to allow birthing partners to spend the night with the new mother and baby and private restrooms in each suite enhance the families' privacy. Suites are large enough to welcome visits from siblings, family and friends in a home-like environment.

Recently, the Sequoia Hospital Foundation funded the purchase of new specialized, state-of-the-art Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum (LDRP) beds for each of the hospital's birthing suites. Wireless telemetry monitors, also funded by the Foundation's donors, allow mothers the freedom to get up and walk the halls and even shower, untethered by cables, while their vitals and those of the baby are transmitted to the nursing station. A partnership between Sequoia and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital has established the on-site Special Care Nursery, a level II neonatal intensive care unit located within the Birth Center. Staffed by nurses from Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, our level II designation means we have the expertise and equipment to care for high-risk babies should any complications arise.

From fluffy robes and slippers for our new moms to a special celebration dinner for the couple the night before they go home, Sequoia's Birth Center staff attend to every need. A unique partnership with the Redwood City Public Library even provides each Sequoia newborn with his/her first book. Sequoia Hospital's Birth Center and its compassionate staff are consistently recognized for the exceptional care they provide to our new families. Sequoia was recently named a "Family Favorite 2008 Best Hospital" by readers of Bay Area Parent Magazine. Over 2,200 readers voted us "Best Hospital" over all other hospitals in the Bay Area.
